With the invent of T20 format, dimensions of cricket are totally changed. Due to increasing number of teams and commercialization, frequency of matches played has gone high. Cricket has turned its shift towards batsman. Batsman have invented different ways to score fast runs. From past decade, world have seen number of T20 highest scores. Here we look at top 10 highest successful run chase T20. Teams batting second are listed first.
#10 Australia (197/7) v Pakistan (191/6)
Semi final of the T20 world cup 2010 was a high scoring match.The math was played on 14 May 2010 at Gros Islet. Batting first, Pakistan scored a total of 191/6. The total comprise of brilliant fifties by Akmal brothers. Kamran Akmal scored 50 of 34 balls. While his younger brother came up with 56 of 35 balls. Batting second Australia had to score at a run rate of 9.55 per over. After early losses, MEK Hussey and CL White batted brilliantly. In the last over Australia needed 18 runs to win the match. Pakistan captain choose Saeed Ajmal to bowl. Hussey struck 2 sixes and a four on three consecutive balls to win the match. Hessey ended up scoring 60 not out in 24 balls. This run chase gets number 10 as highest successful run chase T20.
#09 India (200/3) v Australia (197/5)
In 2016 India white washed Australia by 3-0 in T20 series. Australia batted first in the match and scored 197 for 5 wickets. Courtesy a brilliant 124 not out of just 71 balls by there standing captain Shane Watson. In his score Watson struck 6 sixes and 10 fours. Watson became the first Australian to hit centuries in all formats of international cricket. In return Rohit Sharma and Shikar Dhawan got to a flying start. Virat Kohli continued his Indulgence of run chase scoring. He too scored 50 in that one highest successful run chase T20. At last India needed 17 to win from last over. Yuraj Singh blasted first two balls for four and a six. Suresh Raina finished the job with a 4 in last ball of the last over.
#08 South Africa (200/3) v India (199/5)
In there tour to India, South Africa chased one of the highest t20 scores. The tour started with that specific game. Batting first India scored 199 runs. The immense total included Rohit Sharma’s brilliant 106 runs of just 66 balls. His brilliant innings included 12 fours and 5 sky high sixes. Virat Kohli 43 and MS Dhoni 20 not out helped India to get the total. In their chase, HM Amla and AB de Villiers scored quick fire runs at the start. AB de Villiers scored 51 of 32 balls. At the end JP Dumminy 68 and Farhan Behardien 32 not out helped South Africa cross the line. All Indian bowlers went for runs at economy rate over 10 except Ashwin. Furthermore, JP Dumminy of South Africa was prized with man of the match.
#07 New Zealand (202/5) v Zimbabwe (200/2)
During Zimbabwe tour of New Zealand in 2012 one of highest successful run chase T20 match was played on 14 February. Batting first, Zimbabwe scored 200 runs for only two wickets. H Masakadza scored 62 runs of 42 balls. He scored his runs with 3 fours and 4 sixes. BRM Taylor’s 75 of 43 balls helped Zimbabwe to reach 200 runs mark. In return New Zealand openers started brilliantly. RJ Nicol replied with 56 of 37 and JEC Franklin with 60 of 37. KS Williamson 20 of just 5 balls at the end got New Zealand home.
#06 India (202/4) v Australia (201/7)
Another one of the highest successful run chase T20 was made by India v Australia. They played the match on 10 October 2013 at Rajkot India. Indian wickets are considered as batting paradise given ball not spinning. Australia batted first and scored 201 for the loss of 7 wickets. Aaron Finch was the highest scorer with 89 off just 52 balls. And his inning incorporated 14 fours and 1 six. He got precious contributions from Nic Maddinson and Glen Maxwell. Maddinson scored 34 and Maxwell contributed quick fire 27. India’s chase featured a returning Yuvraj Singh scoring a blistering 77 not out in just 35 balls with 8 fours and 5 sixes. Shikhar Dhawan 32 off 19 and MS Dhoni 24 off 21 helped the cause at the end. India chased down the target in 19.4 overs. Yuvraj Singh got the Man of the match for his match winning effort.
#05 Australia (205/5) v South Africa (204/7)
In the second match of the series, South Africa put up a total of 204 in 20 overs. With the contribution of captain Faf du Plessis’ 79 off 41 balls. Quinton de Kock and David Miller also contributed with scores of 44 and 33. Their side post a competitive total on board. But Australian players had other minds. Australia’s response did not start well as they lost the first three wickets for just 32 runs in 5.4 overs. However, a record stand of 161 runs between David Warner and Glenn Maxwell for the fourth wicket helped the Aussies chase down the total in the very last ball of the match.Warner scored 77 off 40 while Maxwell scored 75 off 43 balls to set the tone for one of the highest successful chase T20.
#04 South Africa (208/2) v West Indies (205/6)
First match of the first ever T20 world cup was a historic one. Batting first West Indies scored 205 runs. This total was highest T20 team total at that moment. Chris Gayle scored 117 runs at a strike rate of 205.26. His century was first ever in any international T20 contest. Gayle century comprised of 7 fours and 10 gigantic sixes. Gibbs attacked the West Indian bowlers from the start and scored a match winning 90 not out off 55 balls. His innings compiled with 14 fours and 2 sixes. JM Kemp 46 of 22 balls supported him well to get the target in 17.4 overs. Despite losing the match, Chris Gayle was awarded with man of the match. The match gets 4th position in highest successful run chase T20.
#03 India (211/4) v Sri Lanka (206/7)
Sri Lanka toured India in 2009. During the tour 2nd T20 international was a high scoring T20. The match was played on 12 December 2009. Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat first. Thy put on a total of 206 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Kumar Sangakkara 59 of 31 set up the Sri Lanka score. Indians had to score 207 to win the match and the series. Virender Sehwag set the tone for the chase with 64 off 36 balls. MS Dhoni scored 46 off 28 balls. And Yuvraj Singh 60 not out off 25 balls with 5 sixes made sure India didn’t lose any momentum and took India to win. Yuvraj won the match with a six.
#02 England (230/8) South Africa (229/4)
South Africa posted a massive total of 229 in 20 overs at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai in the 2016 ICC World T20. This massive total included fifties by HM Amla, Q de Kock and JP Dumminy. Q de Kock’s 52 of 24 balls was highlight of the innings. In run chase J Roy 43 of 16 balls gave his team lift and hope to win the match. Later on, J Root 83 of 44 helped England chase that immense total. J Root was awarded man of the match for his brilliance in the run chase
#01 West Indies (236/6) v South Africa (231/7)
The highest successful run chase T20 played between South Africa v West Indies at Johannesburg, Jan 11, 2015. Batting first South Africa scored highest score in T20 at that time. Scoring 231 runs. South Africa captain played a special innings of 119 on just 56 balls. His best T20 innings included 11 fours and 5 sixes. In return West indies got to a flyer. Chris Gayle quick 90 runs of just 41 balls with 9 fours and 7 sixes helped West Indies chase down the huge target. MN Samuels 60 off 39 balls was also one to help the cause. Chasing the score West Indies also broke the record of highest total in T20. CH Gayle was man of the match for his brilliance with the bat.
